Black LGBT community activist Marielle Franco died fighting civil rights in Brazil
The Civil Rights Movement didn’t end in the 1960s. In fact, all around the world, men and women are fighting tooth and nail for their civil rights to this day, from the gulags of Russia to the streets of Venezuela. And just like in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, leaders are being gunned down on the regular, simply for how effective they are.
Beloved city councillor Marielle Franco was passionate about fighting police brutality in the favelas, representing both the black movement and the LGBT community of Rio de Janeiro.
But Franco was more than a symbol. She was also a flesh-and-blood woman who was gunned down in her car by two men on March 14, 2018. Supporters, admirers, and fellow community activists turned out by the thousands to mourn her death and protest her assassination.
According to the Guardian, former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff called Marielle Franco a ‘tireless social warrior’.
If our civil rights leaders are gunned down, then who will lead us to justice?
